Individual lessons -

Want to beat your close rival at the next CJFL?!

Some members are now taking regular extra lessons.  You learn much more in a concentrated half an hour in a one to one coaching situation than in a whole hour of group work, it is a good way to improve your speed and accuracy. It also helps with stamina, which is important for those of you who want to be able to fence just as well at the end of a day's competition as at the start. (which is of course important if you don't want to get knocked out!) It is also possible to work more quickly through the grades system.

I am available to give individual lessons at certain times during the week term time or during weekends and holidays. If you are interested in having occasional or regular extra coaching please ask me.

*** Saturday morning individual lessons. Still being investigated, looking for  suitable venue.

A note On Equipment..

As you know, there is plenty of kit for you to use. Can you guess how many washing machine loads it takes to wash all the gloves, plastrons and jackets? Normally about 8 or 9 loads! Now imagine how many washing lines full of thick heavy jackets that is! I would appreciate it if you could all help me to look after the equipment by trying to keep it clean.

Please remember not to leave kit all over the floor - sports centres floors are normally very grubby, and while kit is strewn all around a bag it gets walked on too! If you are looking for a certain size, it shouldn't mean dragging everything out of the bag - they are organised by size and clearly labelled. When you take your kit off, please stuff your  things back into the correct bags, not just throw it on top. This also makes tidying up at the end much easier too.

I do try and keep things washed on a regular basis, before it gets smelly, but having to do extra loads just because it got grubby on the floor or has ribena down the front doesn't help. Lots of extra washing also shortens the life of the clothing.

Clean kit is much nicer for everybody (and looks smarter!), thank you for helping to take care of it.

THIS TERM......      NEW Sept 2010

Welcome. Firstly, welcome to the new members of the club who have joined us recently. It is lovely to see you, and I hope you'll find us friendly and welcoming. We now have a little over 50 SwordPlay fencers! Welcome back, of course to all existing members of the club, here's to learning more new moves and climbing the badge ladder.....

We have a busy term ahead of us, with several competitions on the horizon before Christmas.

  • Supermarket vouchers – Thank you to everyone who donated their vouchers. We collected lots, and you will hopefully be seeing some of our new equipment in use soon (as soon as I get the delivery!!).
  • Parents Taster Session – The first session went very well, and I will be holding a second one soon – watch this space!

BIG NEWS!! ”SWORDPLAY MINIS” COMING SOON!
Yes, SwordPlay Minis! I am going to be holding a ‘pre-fencing’ class for ages 4 and 5. It will be held on Tuesdays from 4.15 to 5.10 at Highwoods Community Centre (2 mins from Gilberd School). The class will be based on learning basic fencing skills through games and fun activities, with some fencing using the ‘Minifence’ foam and plastic sword system, not metal weapons!! We will be starting on 5th October, so if you know anyone who may be interested please let them know about it.

SWORD PLAY CHRISTMAS PARTY
AND PRESENTATION CEREMONY

We had a good number of fencers come along for our end of term event. We played several fun games before getting down to the serious business of awarding the badges and certificates. Every club member was given a certificate to recognise a strength in their fencing. There were also a few special 'gold' awards for certain members of the club who have worked particularly hard and deserved a little extra recognition; Philip, James, Noah, Dominic. Well done to all of you.

Club Sleeve Badges  NEW!
Well done to all those of you who have recently been presented with your club badge! These are now available and are presented to any member who represents Sword Play at a competition (other than the Colchester Junior Foil League). The badge needs to be sewn on the NON-SWORD arm sleeve of your fencing jacket. If you don't yet have your own jacket it may be sewn on the back leg of your breeches.

Sword Play Team in Essex County Senior Team Foil Championships

SwordPlay were represented for the first time ever at a senior (adult) event recently when Arthur, Philip and Rev from the Cadet section formed a team to fence in the county championships. They fenced to the best of their ability and worked well as a team, supporting and encouraging each other. They also managed to get some rather cheeky hits on the Cyrano team, who went on to win the event. Well done boys!

Forthcoming Competitions    Updated September 2010

Lots of you are now getting quite experienced and competitive, so I thought I would make sure that you all know what is out there for you. Entering a range of competitions is a great way to enjoy your sport in a different setting. You will get to make a lot of new friends, as well as get a measure of your own fencing ability. Fencing different people is a great way to learn and improve. It is amazing how a day’s competitive fencing can really help your own fencing. If you are in need of kit, I should be able to lend what you need, although having your own breeches is a good idea. A list of kit suppliers is on the links page.

Do have a chat with me if you are interested in entering any of these, I am more than willing to give some advice.

The Colchester Junior Foil League. Next one date tba
You should all know about this by now – I hope most of you have entered it before! Check it out via the CJFL logo link on my homepage

The Leon Paul Junior Series;
This is a series of junior competitions sponsored by the kit manufacturer which is spread across several events around the country. You are free to enter as many as you like. They usually have 2 rounds of poules, followed by knockout rounds. They are very friendly and welcoming – they make a great first step up after the CJFL.

Lots of information, ranking tables and results are online at  www.LeonPaulJuniorSeries.com

Some LPJS comps coming up;

  • 9th or 10th October, Camden LPJS Open to all ages u9 and over. Sat=U11b+g, U15b+g and U17g, Sun= U9b+g, U13b+g and U17b.
  • 6th November, Cambridge LPJS. Open to all ages U9 and over.
  • 28th November, London Team LPJS. I will be looking for experienced team members for this event. It is a great day out, and I would like to have several teams taking part!

Eastern Region Championships
The Eastern Region covers the 6 counties of Essex, Suffolk, Norfolk, Cambridge, Hertfordshire and Bedfordshire. The region’s website is here www.bfaeastern.org.uk This competition is vital if you have your sights set on getting to the National Championship Finals, as you can only go to that by getting a good enough result in this regional qualifier (unless you are under 10)

National Championships
If you are under 10 you can enter this directly. All the older categories can only be entered by qualifying with a good result in the regional competition above.

Team Comps
Both Essex and The Eastern Region hold junior team championships, to which I would love to send Sword Play teams! There are also occasional other comps when we could send teams, such as the Essex school games. I will be looking for team members who have some competition experience.

Adult comps
Once you have turned 13 you are actually able to enter adult competitions! (depending on the date of your birthday) This may seem a bit scary, but you will know if you are ready. (Again, I can help you with this decision) One of the most local is, unfortunately, one of the biggest and hardest as it is the Essex Open, hosted by CADS every September. There are fairly local smaller ones, though, such as the County championships, Norfolk Open in July or the Cambridge Winter in January.

Sword Play Tuesday Win Colchester Foil League!!  AGAIN!

Well done to ALL Tuesday fencers who took part in any of the League competitions last season. This means you have won twice now - a great achievement. The trophy has been engraved and will be on show at some of the club meetings.

Some of the Sword Play Tuesday fencers with the club trophy.

Well done also the Tiptree Wednesday group, who came a very creditable second in the overall club championships. In fact, you actually won the fourth round with the most points, so I'm looking forward to great things from you in the third season!
