Sword Play Parties

Welcome to Sword Play, the party entertainment with a difference! We will keep your guests busy for a whole hour or longer with fencing fun and games.

How are the parties organised?

Sword Play parties are suitable for up to 24 children aged 6 and over.  You would need to book a hall and do the catering, and then leave the entertainment to Sword Play!

The party starts with a game to warm up, after which we get the children kitted out to learn the basic fencing moves.  Then the children get to try out their new found skills against each other. We also play some team games to keep things interesting and prevent the children getting  worn out too quickly!
The format of each party differs slightly, as each group is carefully monitored and the activities are tailored to fit. This means that a game, mini competition or explanation of a new fencing move can be introduced at exactly the right moment, helping the party flow smoothly.
If your party is for one and a half or two hours a short break is included for you to give the children a drink. During this time Sword Play can offer a 5 minute mini craft activity or give a short demonstration of some real fencing equipment.
Towards the end of the party a battle is held - a chance to let loose with those less orthodox fencing moves, and a great hit with the children. Then we finish with a quieter game to calm everybody down before handing back to you.

Wounded in battle!

What equipment do you use?

Our equipment is very safe ~ specially designed foam swords and plastic masks are used to teach the fencing, and the children wear  tabards as a target area. All the equipment is either red or blue so the children can easily identify their team mates.

How is the birthday child treated ?

We make sure the birthday child feels special in several ways. Firstly he or she chooses which colour team to be in, and is made the team captain. There is also a special tabard to wear during the party. Usually the birthday child is able to help with a demonstration of a new fencing move, so gets a bit of extra attention! Also, at the end of the party he or she is awarded with a Sword Play medal to great cheers from all present.

What about parties for older children?
Sword Play now offers 'real kit' parties for the over 10s. As Tina is a fully qualified and experienced coach with the British Fencing Association she can run full coaching sessions for a two hour party. The children get to wear all the protective clothing, (which is certified and carefully maintained,) and use child-sized proper metal weapons. They can learn lots of proper moves, play plenty of matches against their friends and have a mini-competition to finish the session. Please note, however, that although we do play a game or two during these sessions we tend to concentrate on a more 'formal' coaching style, and obviously can't have a battle at the end! (It's still good fun though!)

How do I book a Sword Play Party?

Sword Play parties need to be held in a hall or sports centre so that we have room to play safely without obstructions. The maximum number of children for a party is 24, and we ask that they are aged 6 or above. Older children using foam swords may prefer a two hour party, which gives an opportunity to learn more fencing moves and play extra games and, of course, means less work for you! Full kit parties for 10+ ages are restricted to about 14 children and need to be for the two hour session. Please contact us for exact pricing information.
Each party includes the use of equipment, a certificate for each child and a medal for the birthday child.
If you have any further questions or would like to discuss availability for a booking, please don’t hesitate to contact us. (contacts button is on the left)

Sword Play is based in Colchester, Essex, covering a large surrounding area. We may travel further afield on request
